Saving Your Wedding Day - 50 Do's and Don'ts - The Reception, Part 3

Considering that I've been consulting and planning weddings for over two decades, it's fairly obvious that I would have a broad list to cover what should and should not be done during the planning of a wedding and the wedding day. Most of these are common sense. But, unfortunately, some were discovered during the wedding itself. Here is the second installment of our top 50.

1. After setting the date, the future bride and groom need to sit down and decide who will do what and how much involvement will the parents and siblings have in planning this wedding. Failure to do this can wreak havoc in your life during this process. Oh, and yes, let the family know your decision. And, by the way, don't forget to get the groom involved.

2. Make sure this wedding is what you both want, not what others want. You will live to regret it.

3. Find your reception venue at least one year before the wedding date. Popular dates are being secured at this point, up to 2 years in advance.

4. Before securing the venue, decide if you want a more relaxed or more formal wedding. Remember, an evening/night wedding is more formal.

5. Decide if you want your ceremony at the same place as the reception or at some other location.

6. Call and secure the date for the ceremony if it's at your own place of worship or at another location. This is one of the most overlooked items on this list.

7. Remember to seat older guests away from loud music.

8. Don't seat divorced parents at the same table.

9. Don't forget to offer a vegetarian option on your menu.

10. Take time in picking out the music for your wedding, always keeping in mind the type and age of the guests.

Your wedding reception can be a disaster or the most wonderful day of your life. Planning is key to deciding which way your day is going to go. Leave nothing to chance with your reception. Stay in constant communication with whoever is running that area of your wedding. And truly understand, that no question is a foolish question. It's better to ask now than to be surprised the day of your wedding.
