The Father of the Groom's Role

When it comes to planning a wedding, there is no doubt that the parents of the groom can end up feeling like an afterthought. To be sure, most of the attention is focused on the bride and her parents, but that does not mean that the mother and father of the groom cannot be a special part of the wedding, as well. Here, then, is more about the important role that the groom's father plays at a wedding.

One of the most important things that the father of the groom can do is not written about in wedding etiquette books, nor does it appear on any checklists. His most key job is to offer the support and guidance needed to help his son be not only a wonderful groom, but even more, so an excellent husband. Back in the day, there was much written about the frank talk that the bride's mother would have with her before the wedding to prepare her for married life, and in particular the wedding night.

These days, it is common knowledge that most brides and grooms are well aware of what goes on between newlyweds, and so this traditional heart-to-heart has gone by the wayside somewhat. But this does not mean that the groom's father should also abandon the pre-wedding talk with his son. Not too long ago, I witnessed one of these on a tv reality show, and the groom's father gave him what I thought was a truly sage piece of advice. The young man's father told him that when he came home from work, his wife was going to want to discuss every detail of their days, no matter how minute. This wise father's advice to his son was to listen to her (even when he was not at all interested!), because it would show his new wife how much he cared for her and was interested in what she thought.

The father of the groom can also lend his son a hand when it comes to picking out wedding jewelry gifts. Most young men are not accustomed to purchasing gifts of jewelry, and a wedding calls for several. There is a wedding present for the bride, cufflinks or watches for the groomsmen gifts, and perhaps even a special trinket for the groom's mother. The groom's father can be a big help by lending the expertise he has gained through years of gift buying to make the task easier for a busy groom.

There are some more concrete things that the groom's father can do to help make the wedding a success. It is customary for the parents of the groom to host the rehearsal dinner, which is a lovely part of a wedding weekend. In addition, if it is financially feasible, it would be very thoughtful of the groom's father to offer to help with some of the expenses for the wedding itself, such as the band, or the florist, or the bar. Sometimes the father of the groom might also want to help the groom pay for the honeymoon trip, as well.

How much of a role the groom's father takes in the actual wedding ceremony depends in part on your family's customs and heritage. In a Jewish wedding ceremony, it is traditional for the bride to be escorted down the aisle by both of her parents, not just her father. A very nice part of this tradition is that the groom is also escorted by his mother and father. This is a wonderful custom, and is worthy of consideration for inclusion in your wedding no matter what your faith may be. This ritual symbolizes the joining of two complete families by the union of the bride and groom.

In terms of attire, the father of the groom should plan to dress like the bride's father. If it is a black tie wedding, certainly he would wear a tuxedo. For a less formal affair, a nice dark suit would be appropriate. By all means, make every effort to look as debonair as possible; your son's wedding is a great excuse to treat yourself to a new suit or a stylish new tie. If the wedding is considerably less formal, perhaps at a beach setting, then a jacket and khaki trousers might suffice, but anything more casual would be too inelegant for the groom's father.

So you see, the groom's father does have an important role to play in a wedding. He is never going to be the center of attention (nor does he want to be, in all likelihood), but his efforts are still valuable and appreciated. The father of the groom can really do a lot to help get his son's new marriage off to a terrific start.

How To Write A Cracking Father Of The Groom Speech

I found that writing a father of the groom speech was really hard and required me to get some help online. I had some ideas as I'm sure you do, But it was just putting it all together that I struggled with. The hardest part of a father of the groom speech is starting it. So a little tip to get around this would be start in the middle or start at the end. Write down all your ideas on a piece of paper and then start putting them in order. Then you will have an idea of what you are missing and need to add. To help you will this process I am going to tell you what I think should be in a father of the groom wedding speech. This formula worked wonders for me so I am sure that it will help you write a cracking speech for your son's wedding.

OK when you start your speech you need to make sure you get everyone's attention. You can do this by telling a snappy joke or by using a quote from a famous and popular person. This will grab everyone's attention and they will focus on you. Now you need to introduce yourself. I know a lot of your guests will know who you are but you need to consider that some of the bride's relatives will not know you that well. From here you would go on to welcome everyone and thank them all for coming and making the wedding day an amazing occasion. Now comes the hardest part of the speech which will require you to think a little about what you need to say.

This is the part I found hard since I had so many good and funny experiences with my son. It was hard to pick the best ones that meet the right criteria. So basically you need to share stories or experiences that you have shared with your son that show the father son bond. I am sure you have many also. But before you choose which ones to use try to stick to this criteria. They can be funny or meaningful stories and experiences. Funny tends to work best but if they are short stories you can try getting in a more emotional story too. You need to avoid certain stories that relate to your sons ex wives or sex life. This may be very appealing but you do not want to embarrass you son. In fact it's best not to embarrass anyone, but if you do feel the need to do so then you can always embarrass yourself.

Now you are getting towards the finish. Remember to take your time with the stories and enjoy yourself. Trust me it will make your speech sound better too. It's always nice to make a few loving complements to your new daughter in law. Thank her for being so good for you son and making him a happy man. You can also make a comment on how beautiful she is. This will instant win over her family and assure them that you are happy with the marriage.

After you have done that it's time to pass on some advice to your son, you can give him marriage advice of you are comfortable to do so. Or you can give him some straight up life advice. That is up to you. You should also pass on your blessing to the marriage and wish them a happy future together. Once again you can now thank and welcome everyone and invite them to carry on partying and celebrating the wedding.

Writing The Best Father of the Bride Speech

Speeches delivered by the father of the bride during wedding receptions are perhaps the most sentimental of wedding speeches. In fact, it is more than just a wedding speech as the father is going to talk about his relationship with his daughter. The bride's father will definitely be feeling a lot of emotions on that day and these feelings may overwhelm him if he is unprepared to deliver the traditional father of the bride speech.

It is normal for the father of the bride to be sentimental on their daughter's wedding day. The day brings down a flood of memories of their daughter's entire life. They usually reminisce the times when the bride was a young daddy's girl and then they are hit with the reality that their daughters have grown up. The dads realize that their daughters are about to make their biggest step in their life. All of these memories and realizations build up and the best time for dads to be able to release these emotions is during their speech as the father of the bride.

Traditionally, the bride's father speaks first during the wedding reception. Wait until everyone has seated before beginning your speech. If a wedding planner is involved, they will usually prompt the wedding party who speaks when. The father of the bride speech is usually followed by the groom's speech and then the best man's speech followed by the maid of honor's speech.

Start off your father of the bride speech by getting everyone's attention. Give a short introduction of yourself and then welcome the attendees to the wedding reception. Your speech should welcome not only the groom but also his immediate family into your family. You would also want to mention how the newlyweds look good together. A few words to compliment the ceremony would also be nice additions to your speech.

Once you are done with the niceties, you can begin sharing your father of the bride stories. You can share humorous or sentimental memories of your daughter. You can share anecdotes of how she was growing up. Plus, you have to let the world know how proud you are as her father by stating some of her praiseworthy characteristics. You should also compliment her on how gorgeous she looks in her wedding gown.

As the father of the bride, you are also expected to give some helpful marriage advice to the newlyweds. This part is easy as you can make use of your own marriage as a case in point.

Finish your speech by raising your glass and proposing a toast. Wish the newlyweds a happy life as husband and wife. When you finish the toast, give a short introduction for the groom, whose speech will usually follow the father of the bride's speech.

Principles in Writing a Father of Groom Wedding Speech

The wedding of your son is only a few days from now and you will be speaking through a father of groom wedding speech. It will be a very marvellous occasion for the couple and to you personally as well. In fact, everybody will be excited to attend the wedding and witness the fabulous ceremony of your son. Many of the visitors are going to anticipate great wedding speeches too. Having said that, you must prepare a speech that will be admired, appreciated and treasured by the couple and their guests. Learning the basic principles in writing a speech is what you must do in preparation.

The first principle you need to learn is to write an outline and several drafts. You cannot start writing a speech without brainstorming ideas. It is a requirement to reflect about everything you need to share. You will not stand up in front of many people and speak to them based on random thoughts. You need to know exactly what you have to tell to them. The outline will serve as your guide while the drafts can help you make a perfect speech. Using the outline as your basis of constructing a speech is definitely worth it.

The second principle you must know is to break down your speech into three main parts. After writing your outline, you must categorize all the topics into three. Some points may be shared at the beginning, while others will be at the middle or ending. Basically, these three parts are the introduction, the body and the conclusion. The introduction has to be very short since you are just going to express your thanks and welcome to the guests. The body is where you can talk about the central message of your speech. The conclusion is where the toast happens as well as congratulatory remarks. Writing a speech into three parts is necessary.

The third principle you must not forget is to add humor. Jokes and funny lines can entertain the bride, the groom and all of the wedding guests. Some may not really find your jokes funny but ensure that majority of the people will laugh at your hilarious statements. Take note you must entertain them so give them positive one-liners. Injecting some hilarity can make the boring or dramatic atmosphere a lot more exciting.

Considering these principles is a good help for you to write a father of groom wedding speech. As a father of the groom, you have to contribute in making the wedding memorable through the speech you are going to deliver. Keeping these details in mind is very important to ensure every moment of the wedding is cherished.

Father Of The Groom Wedding Speeches

Father of the groom wedding speeches can be relaxed and humorous. The father of the groom can really set out to enjoy himself, especially if he has a very good relationship with his son. He will be able to recall many things in his son's life that he can use to show his son's character or to laugh about. His speech can add some fun and warmth to the proceedings.

Here are some points that might be helpful when you come to write your speech:

Welcome the bride into your family and say how pleased you are with your son's choice. You can talk about how you came to know her and to like her
Mention her family - how you can see why she is such a fine young woman
Talk about your son. You can tell some funny stories, maybe slightly embarrassing, to show some of the things he got up to or the mistakes he made as a boy or young man. Tell other stories to show the kind of person he was and has become, stories that show his character traits. Maybe he has shown such things as diligence, perseverance or thoughtfulness or other traits that you want to talk about
In telling these stories, your pride in your son will show and that will put emotion into your speech. Your audience will love that
Give him some words of wisdom about married life and what he should do to have a happy married life. You can do this with universal, motherhood statements that will get everyone's agreement

Father of the groom wedding speeches need the same time and attention as any of the other speeches: write out your speech until you refine it to your liking; practice until you know it thoroughly; time your speech to no longer than about three minutes - shorter is better. Take you speech with you on the day but do not read from it constantly. If you can, make some notes in the form of headings and glance at them from time to time to keep you on track.

If you are not used to public speaking, try to relax a couple of minutes before you get up to talk. You can do this by consciously slowing you breathing and taking deep breaths. When you do stand up, pause and calmly look around the audience so that you do not look or feel rushed. This will help settle your nerves. Most importantly, decide to enjoy yourself and to have fun with your son on his wedding day. Put this all together and you will give a great speech and you and your son will have a great day.
