Planning Your Wedding Reception - Keeping Little Ones Occupied During Long Wedding Speeches

Although some couples chose not to have children at their wedding, more and more brides and grooms decide to invite them along. The ones that don´t want kids at their reception usually are afraid they might get bored at crucial moments like during the maid of honour speech.

And of course they have their point, having children at a wedding might pose problems. In order to make things going smooth for both children and their parents (and the other guests) you want to prepare some activities and games to keep them happy and occupied.

If you leave children to their own devices and just hope everything will go smooth, you are probably in for a not so nice surprise. Most children will get bored, especially when the wedding is a more formal sit-down-dinner. But if you plan your wedding with the little guests in mind you can make the reception a memorable event for them as well.

First you have to decide if you want to have the children seated in a separate room. This will work for kids four years and older, babies and toddler usually will have to stay with mom and dad. If you decide on a separate room you can just put up a colouring table and some games. You even might get a TV with some movies to play.

You will need somebody to take care of the kids, if they are left on their own, they won´t stay for long, but soon will be looking for mom and dad. So get some child care, a good ratio is one adult for every five children for small kids, one adult for ten children if they are older. Make sure the childcare you hire are really professionals or have a hand for children.

If the children are seated with the other guests you might want to place a nicely wrapped up present that matches the decoration at each kids place. It might contain little toys (according to the age of the child) which they can use to keep themselves occupied during (for them) boring moments like the wedding speeches. Good choices are little colouring books, tiny puzzles, anything that is not too big and gives them something to do.

You also can put up a table with (washable) crayons, non-sticky clay and other art-supplies like glitter, feathers and pipe-cleaners. Make sure to have enough material as the children will go through it with amazing speed.

You also can plan child-specific entertainment, like a clown, a balloon-artist, somebody who paints their faces or applies removable tattoos. You will need an extra room where the kids can enjoy their entertainment without disturbing the other guests.

Still another option to keep the kids happy is to integrate them in the wedding activities. When the dance is going on you can ask the DJ to announce a "kids-only" dance for example. They will be happy and grandmas and aunts (and the proud parents of course) will love it!

So with a little preparation a wedding reception can be a fun experience for both children and adults!

It's Your Wedding - Be Unique and Creative

Be Unique and Creative on your Wedding Day!

It's your day... we've covered Planning your Wedding above. Now let's add some spice! I LOVE Creative Brides! Once, during the Garter/Bouquet section of a wedding I played, the Bride and Groom thought this would be funny... She sat facing the crowd, the groom ready to reach under her skirt to get the garter.

We planned to have a kids slip behind her (unseen), and place an oiled, messy baby doll under the dress. The Groom cracked his knuckles, reached in, and shot back in Presumed Terror as he pulled the baby doll onto the dance floor!

THAT WAS FUNNY! No, you don't have to go THAT far, but it will always be remembered! I've played Irish Weddings with dancers hired to do jigs, seen cakes shaped like Super Mario World, teared up as the Groom, who just lost his dad, danced with his mom to a Special Song we selected together. These moments are poignant or fun, and lend an emotional value to a reception that makes it most memorable for all. BE CREATIVE (and find vendors that will help you!).

Also, add a Memorable Moment for a Special Guest!

This is a very touching moment for all. The DJ announces that a Very Special Couple are celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary next week, and he invites them to the floor to dance to the song they first danced to at their own wedding. It's beautiful, and something every guest at you wedding will remember and cherish. Make sure the photographer catches this moment forever.

When I sit with the Bride and Groom a week before the Wedding I ask them to call their moms and other family members to see if there are any Special Dances we can do for the guests. Remember, YOUR Wedding should always include a few heartfelt moments for family members - that's what they'll remember from your wedding.

Once the groom asked me if he could plan a dance with his grandmother (his grandfather had just passed away). They danced to "I left my heart in San Francisco" - the grandparents' wedding song. Not a dry eye in the place.

Always remember to incorporate your family into the wedding with a few memorable dances. AND you can only plan all this properly with a DJ who will sit with you and care for your wedding.

I LOVE things like this - think of the guests driving home that night, talking about a great wedding memory!

The Most Romantic Wedding Traditions from Around the World: Germany, Russia & Ireland

If you'd like to add a slice of your heritage to your wedding ceremony, you're not alone. Millions of couples are embracing their ancestry and choosing to incorporate some of the best traditions from around the world in their ceremonies here at home. Here are some of the most interesting wedding traditions you might find if you attended a wedding in Germany, Russia or Ireland. If you or your family are from one of these countries, why not try adding some phrases from your ancestor's native tongue in your wedding vows for a truly memorable touch!

Germany

To fund her future wedding, when a baby girl is born in Germany, several trees are planted and tended throughout her childhood. When she is to be married, the trees are sold to pay for her wedding and to act as a dowry. To help defray costs of a honeymoon, friends and family of the wedding couple will make a newspaper or newsletter featuring pictures and articles about the couple's youth. This newsletter is sold at the wedding.

A German wedding can last up to three days. There is first a civil ceremony, then the following day is a traditional ceremony. Finally on the third day is a religious ceremony. Guests bring old dishes to the second night's party to break, and the couple sweeps them up. This symbolizes that their home will never be broken.

As the wedding couple leaves the church, they throw coins to the children who have attended. A customary tradition is for the best man to steal the bride and take her to a local pub, where they drink champagne and hide.

The groom must find them, and pay for all they drank. Also, before leaving the reception hall, guests block the door and demand payment from the groom (usually in the form of a promise of a party) before they allow the wedding couple to leave for their honeymoon.

Russia

What are referred to in western society as wedding rings are in Russia called engagement rings. These plain gold bands are worn on the ring finger of the right hand. When a person is widowed or divorced, they will move the ring to the left hand. The groom pays for the ring, although the couple chooses them together.

A holdover from the days of communism is a procession of cars that arrives at the ceremony. Since large cars were a sign of wealth, effort is made to rent one for the bride and groom. In addition, guests to the wedding will each drive to the wedding alone to increase the size of the procession. The groom traditionally takes the bride to the church, but before he is allowed to do so, he must pass a series of challenges put up by her family and friends, including trivia questions, physical obstacles, and even an actual climb up to the bride's window.

Marriage ceremonies are held in the licensing office, and must be witnessed. Although church weddings are held, they have no legal significance, so they are often held after the legal ceremony. At the reception, it is customary to drink to excess, with a series of toasts offered to the bride and groom. Prior to leaving the reception hall, the bride is stolen away by the friends of the groom. He must then locate her and pay her ransom. This can happen several times, so the groom must be ever watchful of his new wife.

Ireland

Instead of wedding bands, more and more Irish couples are choosing to wear the Claddagh ring. This design has a heart being held on either side with a hand, and a crown on top. Wearing the ring on the left hand with the heart facing you indicates marriage, wearing it with the heart facing away means you are single. The ring may be used as an engagement ring or a wedding band, and is often passed from mother to daughter.

As the bride and groom leave the church, they throw a handful of coins into the crowd of waiting guests. The bride will carry a horseshoe with her for luck throughout her marriage. This is usually sewn into the dress, although it might be a plastic cake decoration today. Truly traditional Irish weddings are held only from April through October, but never in the month of May due to superstition. This half of the year is considered the "light" half. Mead, which is a honey wine, is served at Irish receptions, and is believed to be the source of the word honeymoon. It is thought to increase virility and fertility, and is therefore in great abundance at weddings. As the bride and groom leave the reception hall, there are often bagpipes stationed just outside to play them to their waiting car, which whisks them away to their honeymoon spot.
