Writing The Best Father of the Bride Speech

Speeches delivered by the father of the bride during wedding receptions are perhaps the most sentimental of wedding speeches. In fact, it is more than just a wedding speech as the father is going to talk about his relationship with his daughter. The bride's father will definitely be feeling a lot of emotions on that day and these feelings may overwhelm him if he is unprepared to deliver the traditional father of the bride speech.

It is normal for the father of the bride to be sentimental on their daughter's wedding day. The day brings down a flood of memories of their daughter's entire life. They usually reminisce the times when the bride was a young daddy's girl and then they are hit with the reality that their daughters have grown up. The dads realize that their daughters are about to make their biggest step in their life. All of these memories and realizations build up and the best time for dads to be able to release these emotions is during their speech as the father of the bride.

Traditionally, the bride's father speaks first during the wedding reception. Wait until everyone has seated before beginning your speech. If a wedding planner is involved, they will usually prompt the wedding party who speaks when. The father of the bride speech is usually followed by the groom's speech and then the best man's speech followed by the maid of honor's speech.

Start off your father of the bride speech by getting everyone's attention. Give a short introduction of yourself and then welcome the attendees to the wedding reception. Your speech should welcome not only the groom but also his immediate family into your family. You would also want to mention how the newlyweds look good together. A few words to compliment the ceremony would also be nice additions to your speech.

Once you are done with the niceties, you can begin sharing your father of the bride stories. You can share humorous or sentimental memories of your daughter. You can share anecdotes of how she was growing up. Plus, you have to let the world know how proud you are as her father by stating some of her praiseworthy characteristics. You should also compliment her on how gorgeous she looks in her wedding gown.

As the father of the bride, you are also expected to give some helpful marriage advice to the newlyweds. This part is easy as you can make use of your own marriage as a case in point.

Finish your speech by raising your glass and proposing a toast. Wish the newlyweds a happy life as husband and wife. When you finish the toast, give a short introduction for the groom, whose speech will usually follow the father of the bride's speech.
