Although some couples chose not to have children at their wedding, more and more brides and grooms decide to invite them along. The ones that don´t want kids at their reception usually are afraid they might get bored at crucial moments like during the maid of honour speech.
And of course they have their point, having children at a wedding might pose problems. In order to make things going smooth for both children and their parents (and the other guests) you want to prepare some activities and games to keep them happy and occupied.
If you leave children to their own devices and just hope everything will go smooth, you are probably in for a not so nice surprise. Most children will get bored, especially when the wedding is a more formal sit-down-dinner. But if you plan your wedding with the little guests in mind you can make the reception a memorable event for them as well.
First you have to decide if you want to have the children seated in a separate room. This will work for kids four years and older, babies and toddler usually will have to stay with mom and dad. If you decide on a separate room you can just put up a colouring table and some games. You even might get a TV with some movies to play.
You will need somebody to take care of the kids, if they are left on their own, they won´t stay for long, but soon will be looking for mom and dad. So get some child care, a good ratio is one adult for every five children for small kids, one adult for ten children if they are older. Make sure the childcare you hire are really professionals or have a hand for children.
If the children are seated with the other guests you might want to place a nicely wrapped up present that matches the decoration at each kids place. It might contain little toys (according to the age of the child) which they can use to keep themselves occupied during (for them) boring moments like the wedding speeches. Good choices are little colouring books, tiny puzzles, anything that is not too big and gives them something to do.
You also can put up a table with (washable) crayons, non-sticky clay and other art-supplies like glitter, feathers and pipe-cleaners. Make sure to have enough material as the children will go through it with amazing speed.
You also can plan child-specific entertainment, like a clown, a balloon-artist, somebody who paints their faces or applies removable tattoos. You will need an extra room where the kids can enjoy their entertainment without disturbing the other guests.
Still another option to keep the kids happy is to integrate them in the wedding activities. When the dance is going on you can ask the DJ to announce a "kids-only" dance for example. They will be happy and grandmas and aunts (and the proud parents of course) will love it!
So with a little preparation a wedding reception can be a fun experience for both children and adults!
